They are spread over Gugarat, Maharashta (the coastal areas through Thane and Colaba and over the ghats through Khandesh, Nasik, Ahmednagar, to the southern and western fringes of Poona ), Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Karnataka, and with a small population in Rajasthan and Orissa. The term KOLI means a "fisherman". This term, witch is applied to a number of communities, only serve to cover a variety of occupation and different stage of socio-cultural development witch are encountered among the various communities witch make up this group. There are the Son Koli, who almost exclusively are fisherman, and then there are the Vaitee Koli and Mangela Koli.
