Dear friends who support Obama: I did not watch the #SOTU. I have not read criticisms of the #SOTU much beyond the headlines. However, the sole Obama-supporting posts Ive seen in my feed have each boiled down to nyah nyah hes still the President. If the best you can say about Obama is that he won a second term two years ago, the same number of terms as GWB, that sounds like all I need to know about the current state of his Presidency. That is really not the legacy I would want to leave, though its probably better than the legacy hes LIKELY to leave given the current state of the world. In all likelihood, in 2017 when the next President is inaugurated, we will have ground troops in Syria, and more troops in Iraq and Saudi Arabia than we have today. Meanwhile, Ukraine will still be in civil war, Russia will be humming along despite continued sanctions, the dollar bubble will have burst, and the Taliban will be mostly in charge in Afghanistan. On the bright side, youll be able to take a vacation in Cuba! (Note: I do not consider this a small accomplishment. Its a fantastic accomplishment, but it did require the cooperation of the Saudis in cutting oil prices to get the Cubans to finally come to the table.) I also expect that our relationship with Iran will have improved, though it will have been out of the need for their help in fighting ISIS, not because its the right thing to do. The US only ever does the right thing for the wrong reasons.
