Dear members, Since last year, an emergency has been unfolding among the youth in Uganda today. It’s not in the headlines, newspapers, mentioned on radios and you may not have heard about it anywhere. The proportion of Ugandans aged 15 – 49 who are infected has risen and now stands at 7.3% (and even higher in women at 8.3%) and up from 6.4%. It also shows that 124,000 were infected with HIV in 2009; 128,000 in 2010; 130,000 in 2011. More are expected next year; and the year after. Some youth do not know their status and the fear to get tested for HIV is very high. Their involvement into relationships is also high and the trust they have for their boyfriends and girlfriends is overwhelming leading to no use of condoms. If this continues, the HIV burden in our country is projected to increase by 700,000 new infections over the next five (5) years. Youth are everywhere trying to look for jobs and are being innovative so that they can survive. Since they cannot access jobs and capital (money) to accomplish their goals, they have now resolved to robbery, drug abuse, prostitution, betting, among others. With your support, we can help youth to achieve their goals and objectives in life through the provision of psychological support, trainings, counseling, and peer education, among others. Together, we can give in our time, experience, money, knowledge to volunteer with us to see a changing generation of youth who can be able to work for themselves and care about their health. We can teach them how to work in groups, for youth clubs, write important documents, to see that their dreams are brought to light. Right now, KEAs immediate response to the crisis includes; · Reaching out to secondary schools through training workshops · Using Music, Dance and Drama in secondary schools to teach Abstinence, Behavior change and Career guidance. · Creation of community and school clubs · Community outreaches for HIV prevention messages · Involvement in workshops to push youth initiatives Together we can help prevent new HIV infections among the youth. Let’s not wait for another day to help. You can make a gift to kea or volunteer with us to change the lives of youth today. We can count on you to support us in providing information, counseling, funds, skills and volunteering with us to reach our organizational goals. Sincerely,
