Death is merely a stepping stone….. Many of us are afraid of dying. That leap into the unknown after a long or a not so long life terrorises the ego which desperately wants to survive, and even stay forever in this lowly world. So attached are we to our body, we cannot bear to become separate from it, even when the body is worn out and determined to move on to other skies. There’s something strange and illusory about this obsession, this somewhat forceful will which tries to prove there is only one life, a few dozen years - maybe more, maybe less – and, thereafter, nothing but a small pile of dust. We are very good at limiting the eternity of what we are. And yet… Why this fear? It should not be. Fear manifests because our mind has somehow closed itself to the reality of our consciousness. The mind is ephemeral. It makes us believe that, because everything is always changing everything also definitively and irremediably dies; so the mind ceaselessly makes us seek in the frenetic activity of the exterior manifested world. The mind frantically feeds on excitement which gives it a sense of existence and recognition. Then we lose the things we thought we possessed, like small deaths we repeatedly experience until the day we finally lose the last thing we thought we possessed: our body. The ego keeps us locked within this illusion, cradling us in its soft music, flattering our senses, our thoughts… When the death of the body arises, we are afraid to surrender this final possession. To comprehend and really grasp that physical death is not an end in itself, you have to transcend faith as it were. Faith presupposes doubt; it is the stimulant that incites us to discover reality. Faith is of course necessary, at least at first, for trying to perceive or intellectually understand why death is a delusion, a viewpoint of the mind. Death can frighten us because our consciousness is buried, hidden by our mind and our thoughts. Consciousness, which lies beyond thought, must be reactivated so that we may live the truth of eternity that exists within each of us. We think wrongly and with utmost arrogance, that death is the final blow to all evolution… We have lost knowledge of Self. By meditating “transcendentally”, by discovering this zone located beyond thought, we begin to perceive a new field, a field of knowing. Consciousness widens, coming to witness the aberration of the belief that there are limits to what we are. We turn towards this boundless field of unlimited consciousness which surpasses everything we thought we knew. What was before faith, becomes concrete reality just by awakening Consciousness. Please understand, this is not just a short-lived experience; we are talking about the reality of life, of what we all have. It is the inalienable right of human beings to experience and know the eternity of consciousness. It’s not something esoteric. Everyone has the right to feel and to experience this space where no limitation exists. Death of the Self does not exist, and the greatest irrationality of modern “Cartesian” thinking is the belief that everything comes to an end from one day to the next. When you are freed from this idea of mortality, life takes over in all its strength of eternity. Life is perceived in its reality, which is a continual thread without beginning or end… In eternity there is no beginning, no end. It is a continuum, a vibration of energy made from little ups and downs to which thoughts, egos and actions attach themselves. True life is located beyond all activity which the mind understands in a limited way. To transcend is to hold the key for opening the door to the infinite. To transcend is to discover your right, and maybe even your duty to access this experience of the reality of your own eternity where you sit delicately in consciousness, observing life as it unfolds, like a witness or a spectator watching a play. It is being settled in a world of softness. It is discovering this space, here, right here in the heart, where everything is possible, where boundlessness is no longer a dream or a fantasy… the Self is revealed in its humble grandeur, its compassion without limits… it encompasses everything, absolutely everything, boundlessly. When located in the Self, we observe ourselves with a degree of humour and even incredulity, asking ourselves this astonishing but legitimate question, why didn’t I go there earlier? In addition, and it is important to experience this, widening the Consciousness, making it Conscious of itself, also means gaining access to eternal youth… Consciousness stays young; it is always wrinkle-free. Because it knows it is infinite and limitless, it enjoys life from the innocent stance of youth. Consciousness is the fluidity of eternity flowing through all our cells. It understands that only “parasitic” thoughts age the mind and the body… Some thoughts allow the ego to exist… The ego wants us to fear the end of life. But these are merely thoughts, and Consciousness made conscious knows it and finds it amusing, observing this game of cat and mouse perpetuated for millennia between the ego, the body and our fears…. Let’s not forget that Consciousness is eternally young… it is the very elixir of eternal youth itself; it is Consciousness that has become conscious of itself existing, vibrating at every moment of life. It is not necessary to go looking elsewhere, since we already have it right here… In fact, life, sacred in its existence and its unfolding, is impregnated with eternity. It is up to us to discover it and accept it as something totally natural. This is one thing among many others that practicing Transcendental Meditation can bring us.
