Death of late Prof Iyayi:It is very painful but more painful when most Nigerians are made to believe that NASS members are not doing anything but just collecting money. That NASS is not doing anything to check the executive arm. This we have been saying is not true at all . Nigerians should pls recall that I moved a motion on Abuse of power on Nigeria highwaysas far back as December 14,2011.As lawmakers we did our work but the executive that is to implement, did they?Maybe if they had joined NASS to check this lawlessness,Iyayi might not have died from this same executive lawlessness my motion sought to check. MOTION:Need to check abuse of power on our highways:Hon Abiodun Abudu-Balogun. The House: Notes the excessive siren blowing convoys by Honourable Ministers, personnel of the armed forces, police and other officials of the Executive arm of Government on our highways day in day out; Further notes that the already traumatised Nigerians are chased away from the roads as if they have are not qualified to drive on these roads as the group stated above; Aware that this action is a flagrant display of power that has great psychological effect on the general public especially the youth; Further aware that this action, apart from its oppressive tendencies, also costs tax payers much money; Disturbed that these privileged Nigerians ride about with over four SUVs and dozens of security personnel accompanying them and driving in reckless manner; Further disturbed that while many Nigerians are feeding from hand to mouth, this act of lawlessness is on the increase year in year out; Concerned that the call on officials of the Executive arm of government, especially the honourable ministers to reduce their expenditures in line with what NASS has done seems to be falling on deaf ears. Resolves to: 1.urge the President to check the excesses of the political office holders and personnel of the armed forces and para military on our roads; 2.mandate the committee on Governmental affairs and FRSC to put appropriate measures in place to ensure strict compliance.
