Death to Self? Many teach that we are to take up our cross and die to self. How will you know when your self is dead? As a young Christian, I tried to follow this teaching and die out to my self, or, as it was described, my soul-life. I remember those years of self mortification, always looking out for evidence that my self was dead. But it never was! My self was watching myself to see if myself was dead! What futility! What I was trying to do was get rid of my carnal mind by constantly seeking to die to it. But Paul said to present your body and be transformed by the renewing of your mind. The renewed mind sees that we are new creations in Christ, our spirit had been brought into union with Him. He is the means and the source of our holiness and spiritual growth. I am no longer trying to die out to self. Instead, I am cultivating the new life that is in me and the new God-given identity as a son of God . As I behold Him I am being changed from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord. I am rejoicing in what God has made me through grace, not focused on the ghost of my former life in Adam.
