Deb directs hawkers to remove stalls from roadsides North Bengal Development Department minister Gautam Deb on Monday toured several wards of the Siliguri Municipality Corporation to take stock of the condition of roads. He said he found many thoroughfares occupied by street hawkers, causing traffic congestions and creating obstacles for pedestrians. The minister said his department was focused on reducing traffic congestion in town as also to mitigate pollution. “Footpaths are meant for pedestrians, but they have been taken over by hawkers,” he said, adding hawkers had been ordered to vacate roadsides and footpaths. Deb toured Hill Cart Road, Sevoke Road and other busy areas following which he directed municipality officials to evacuate roadside hawkers if they ignore his orders. He urged Siliguri’s business community to support him in beautifying the town. Deb was accompanied by TMC district general secretary Krishna Chandra Pal and SMC working chairman Nantu Pal among others during his tour. (HS)
