Debra the Zebra Update Following long consultations with our - TopicsExpress

Debra the Zebra Update Following long consultations with our rangers, the vet and local residents, it is with sadness that I have to advise the decision was made to humanly euthanize Debra the Zebra today. The vet maintains that our decision to not intervene early, based on her condition at that time, was the right decision as her leg may have healed on its own. However, the vet would have been expecting to see much more improvement in her mobility and therefore concluded that it is extremely unlikely the leg will heal without the need for huge intervention, which will not be practical in financial terms or in our ability to provide the long term aftercare that would be necessary following, what would be, a major surgical procedure. The decision was a very difficult one for all concerned as we have all come to know her so well. The decision was based on her mobility deteriorating and the lower leg showing signs of additional strain. Added complications are the male mating with her also putting additional stress on her hip and causing additional pain. Should she conceive the additional weight is going to present further complications and the birth process would be extremely painful for her. The vets opinion is that her right to be free from pain was now being compromised as is her freedom to act in a natural manner. It was therefore agreed that it was better to relieve her from any further pain or suffering.
