Dec 4 – Eugene Polley engineer invented “lazy bones” also known as your TV’s remote control. In 1935 Polley dropped out of tech school and took a job as a stock boy for Zenith Electronics, later promoted to parts department where he created the company’s first catalog, then he was transferred to engineering where his assignments included work on radar during World War II (remember the other day was Doppler’s birthday) for the US Department of Defense. In 1955 he invented the remote control for TV marketed as the Flash-Matic. Polley also contributed to the push-button car radio and the development of video disks. Not bad for a stock boy. The earliest example of remote control by radio waves was developed in 1898 by Nikola Tesla. -Koby Clemens son of Roger “The Rocket” Clemens. Koby was a two-sport star at Memorial High School in Houston splitting time between football and baseball. He had a .519 batting average his senior year and was named all-state. He signed in 2004 to play baseball for University of Texas his father’s alma mater but never attended choosing to go straight to the pros after being drafted by the Houston Astros in 2005 in the 8th round. The Astros paid him a $380,000 signing bonus. As of May 2014 he was on the Sugar Land Skeeters roster; -Crazy Horse was a Native American War Leader leading a war party to victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876. He ranks among the most notable Native American tribal members. Died from a Bayonet wound. -Spanish Dictator and General Francisco Franco ruled Spain from 1936 to 1975. In 1926 he became Spain’s youngest General and then in 1936 he lead a right-wing uprising starting the Spanish Civil War. Later in ’36 he becomes the Supreme Commander and establishes the State of Spain. Spain stayed out of WWII because Franco could not reach agreement with Hitler. Franco was aided by some support from fascist Germany and Italy. His early rule continued the Nationalist “White Terror” oppressing, imprisoning and executing political opponents. Despite the above, U.S.A. generally considered Spain an ally under Franco’s rule. Franco appointed Prince Juan Carlos to succeed him. It is also Barbara of Portugal’s bday who was the Queen of Spain. Not a typo, she was an infante of Portugal (born Princess of Brazil) but she was the Queen of Spain in the early 1700s. If you are one of just a couple that read these you may remember a King of England tried to marry around this time but couldn’t find a taker in Spain and had to resort to France which may be a butterfly effect for history. Barbara’s portrait shows a beautiful fair skinned well endowed lady. At age 18 she married Ferdinand VI of Spain who would later become King of Spain in a double marriage with her half sister marrying royalty also. The double marriage was meant to repair the relationship between Spain and Portugal. She was considered to marry Louis XV of France. She suffered severe asthma and produced no viable children. She was a music prodigy and the only student of Domenico Scarlatti the great harpsichordist. So her husband Ferdinand ruled Spain until 1759 succeeded by Charles III who reigned till 1788 (this guy’s portrait makes him look ugly) who was succeeded by Charles IV reigned till 1808 also an ugly dude succeeded by Ferdinand VII really ugly dude who ruled for 3 months then was succeeded by Joseph –Napoleon Bonaparte 1 (the older brother of Napoleon) for two years. (So Napoleon ruled France and big brother Joseph ruled Spain). Joseph looks reasonably hansom. He was succeeded by Ferdinand VII for Ferdi’s second reign till 1833 who was succeeded by Isabella II Queen of Spain who reigned till 1868 succeeded by a guy that looks like a Union General named Amadeo I who was succeeded by Alfonso XII succeeded by Alfonso XIII who reigned till 1931 succeeded by Niceto Alcala-Zamoro who was succeeded by Franco acting as Caudillo (military ruler) who ruled until he appointed Juan Carlos (grandson of Alfonso XIII) who reigned until his abdication June 2014 and now Juan Carlos’s son Felipe VI is the King of Spain. Felipe born in 1968 is from the House of Bourbon. I recently read that bourbon is a good investment. His mother is Sofia of Greece and Denmark a descendant of England’s Queen Victoria and she was in the line of succession to the British throne. Are the royalty all related? -Jay-Z; -Tyra Banks; -Marisa Tomei actress “My Cousin Vinney”; -Max Baer, Jr. played Jethro on Beverly Hillbillies; -Fred Armisen (imitated President Obama on SNL); -Jeff Bridges; -Dennis Wilson, Gary Rossington bassist of Lynyrd Skynyrd; and -Motorcycle Racer Ryan Dungey youtu.be/hc6SpiWKs20
