Decades ago, the phrase animal rights became associated with writers who do not believe that animals have any moral rights at all. More recently, the term vegan has been corrupted, as it has become associated with diets and ways of living that involve animal use. Now we have abolitionist vegans who are committed neither to abolitionism nor to veganism. Some endorse welfare reform and single-issue campaigns, or otherwise do not communicate and employ abolitionist principles. Others encourage the continued use of animals bodies and animal products under certain circumstances. This erosion of meaning has real costs. When we are trying to educate others about animal rights, and veganism, and abolitionism, it hurts our efforts if the meanings of our terms are unclear or in doubt. We think it is worth working to restore the integrity of our terminology. What do you think?
