December 10, 1966: MILESTONE -- Beach Boys hitting #1 is only the start... The Beach Boys song, Good Vibrations, hit #1 on the US charts. Their first release since Brian Wilsons visionary creation, PET SOUNDS, an album noted for its highly sophisticated composition and daring innovation, Good Vibrations attempted to carry on that same mission in the context of a 3 1/2 minute single. With its complex vocal arrangements, rapid fire melodic shifts, and the spooky psychedelic sound from a Heath Kit electronic modulator assembly simulating the sound of a Theremin, the Beach Boys closed out 1966 with a song that opened the door for the creative music explosion of 1967. As Good Vibrations hit the airwaves, the Beatles were nestled in Londons Abbey Road studios recording what would result in Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, and SGT. PEPPERs LONELY HEARTs CLUB BAND. Paul McCartney was already deeply engrossed in PET SOUNDS and sought to make the Beatles next album their creative response. Brian Wilson used the best technology available in Los Angeles to record the song including some of LAs Wrecking Crew studio musicians including Hal Blaine, Larry Knechtel, Jim Horn, and Jim Gordon. No Beach Boys aside from Brian contributed to the instrumentation other than a brief Hammond organ part played by Dennis. https://youtube/watch?v=Eab_beh07HU
