December 12, 1985: Ian Stewart, a founding member of, and longtime roadie and keyboardist for The Rolling Stones died of a heart attack in while in the waiting room in a UK clinic. He was there because of respiratory problems. He was 47 years old. Stewart helped start the Stones in 1962. In early May 1963, the bands manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, said that he should no longer be onstage because six members were too many for a popular group and that the older, burly Stewart did not fit the bands image He said Stewart could stay on as road manager and play piano on the Stones recordings. He accepted the demotion and played with the Stones until his death. Indeed, Stewart was vital to the Stones sound, as all the members of the band said many times. Besides the Stones, Stewart also played with Led Zeppelin, The Yardbirds, Howlin Wolf, Ronnie Lane and George Thorogood and The Destroyers. (I Love it Loud! Today in Rock n Roll History)
