December 14, 2014 (Third Sunday in Advent) Text: Isaiah 2:1-4 Isaiah Laura Lindell The Chosen One, “in whom my soul delights” (as God tells us through the prophet Isaiah), is clearly a gem, a person who calls up justice quietly, who is luminous and gentle but also persistent, tireless and spirited. Listen and wonder! This must be the Messiah, the one we call Jesus. God the Creator, too, we are reminded through Isaiah, is creative, righteous and ever present, holding our hands and keeping us safe. Read and marvel! This must be a God who loves us, a God we can utterly trust. If they are for us, then who or what could I ever fear? Oh, so many things, as it turns out: global climate change, terrorism, pandemics, aging, infirmity, death itself…and those are just the big things. Recurring doubt and fear is one reason I need to repent and reclaim God’s promise of forgiveness every time I worship. It’s why I need to rekindle Advent expectations and celebrate Christmas year after year. Thank you, Isaiah, you make me listen and wonder, you inspire Advent hopefulness once again. Prayer: Come, Emanuel, come! Restore our hope and gladden our spirits. Take us, your covenant people, by the hand again. Make us ready and able to go in peace to serve our community and the world in the ways you describe through the poetry of Isaiah. Amen.
