December 16 gang rape: All 4 accused held guilty punishment today: A Delhi court yesterday held guilty all four accused in the gang rape and death of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on December 16 last year. The quantum of sentence for the crime that sparked nationwide protests and forced the government to bring in stringent rape laws will be pronounced today. The prosecution has established beyond reasonable doubt that Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta were guilty of the assault on the 23-year-old woman in a moving bus on December 16, ruled Additional Sessions judge Yogesh Khanna in a jam-packed courtroom. The accused were found guilty of the several offences--including gang rape, murder, kidnapping and unnatural offences-- they had been charged with. The court said the dying declarations of the victim, statements of 85 prosecution witnesses, DNA, forensic and electronic evidence proved the guilt of the accused. A juvenile has already been sentenced to three years in a correctional facility, while a fifth defendant, bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanging in his prison cell in March while awaiting trial.
