December 25th, Christmas, is commonly celebrated as the birthday - TopicsExpress

December 25th, Christmas, is commonly celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ. The perpetuating occidental traditions derived from the bible are fun and make Christmas a unique holiday. Personally, it is an arbitrary day around the winter solstice signifying longer and brighter days to come. Like Thanksgiving, it is the communal aspect that makes it a truly special day. Being an atheist, Im not saying dont go to church, ironically. Instead, only realize that the antiquated morals of the bible shouldnt be blindly read as the sole source of all that is good. Since the Old Testament isnt taken seriously in this age, I shall refer to the New Testament. Any holy book that tells you how to treat your slaves should be immediately disqualified as a source for moral code. In the following parable (reading from one of the multiple bibles within arms reach), Jesus clearly approves of beating slaves even when ignorant of wrongdoing: Luke 12:47-48 And that servant who knew his masters will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating. But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. My lack of beliefs arent antonymous with the bible however, so I will keep the negativity brief, showing only the tip of the iceberg. A huge problem with most secular movements is that they come across as bigots, so the opposing party has no interest in listening. Its like writing on rocks and throwing them. This is a quick attempt at advocacy using a sympathetic approach. Some of my favorite quotes are actually present in the bible. And with that I shall leave a couple here not only for my religious friends, but for everyone. Galatians 6:9 And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. Matthew 7:12 So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them Luke 6:31 And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them Have a Merry Christmas!
