December 27, 2014 Dear parents and guardians, We wanted to inform you of a heartbreaking tragedy that has affected our Cross Oaks family. Moriah Modisette, a kindergarten student in Mrs. Marshall’s class, died in a car accident on Christmas Eve. Many of you may have heard this news already through the media or from friends. We ask that you keep Moriah’s family in your hearts and thoughts as they struggle with her loss. We have informed our staff as well, and will continue to support one another to get through this challenging time together. When school resumes in January, our district counseling department will be available to students, teachers, and our Cross Oaks families on an ongoing basis. Death affects each of us in very personal ways, so we ask that you please contact the school should you or your child have concerns or need assistance. Parents may want to talk to your children about this tragedy and encourage them to discuss their feelings. We suggest that you listen closely to what they have to say and: * If they have questions, answer them simply and honestly. * Do not attempt to hide your own feelings while discussing their own. * Discuss your own family’s beliefs about death. Many of you have asked about ways we can support Moriah’s family at this time, and they have asked that those who would like to provide financial assistance contribute by using this link: bit.ly/1wSELlg If and when other support is needed, we will share additional information with our Cross Oaks community. The family is very thankful for everyone’s prayers and support, and they appreciate how respectful our community has been of their privacy as they grieve with one another. If would like to share messages of support or warm wishes for the family, please send these on to me ([email protected]), and I will pass these along to them. Please know that we are here to support one another during this distressing event and, if the understanding or grieving process becomes overwhelming to you or your child, we are here to help. Sincerely, Matt Preston Principal Cross Oaks Elementary
