December 3: day 1 - Hunter ended up not being first case, the surgeon joined rounds and explained to us that Hunter being such a complicated case would be going to the OR around 1pm. He couldnt estimate how long it would be, there was little chance Hunter would survive the procedure. We tried to push it out of our minds and be positive. Kristi Daly Hammond runs a lunch program from RMHNA for Stollery families, so we grabbed lunch! Thank u Kristi, u are one amazing woman ❤❤❤ Around 1230 we got a call from the surgeon who wanted to meet with us, my nerves were shot, my 19 day old baby was going for open heart surgery. As we sat and listened to Dr. Al Aklabi explain how he was going to try and save Hunter, it hit me how compassionate this man was. Tears were streaming down my face and he put his hand on my leg and told me it would be OK. We didnt even know the magnitude of Hunters defects until that moment. A few moments later I collapsed at Hunters bedside, I held his finger and kissed his precious head one last time. He was wheeled into the OR for many long agonizing hours, our anxiety bursting at the seams. Finally we seen our surgeon walking down the aisle towards us and he spoke Hunter did better than we expected. I literally fell into his arms and embraced him, this man had saved my babys life... To be continued later tonight...
