December 3rd, 2014 IN THE UPPER ROOM * * BEHIND THE VEIL * Lord, I Want to See - The Upper Room Luke 22:7-14 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover. Where do you want us to prepare for it? they asked. He replied, As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house, The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples? He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there. They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. This morning we come to the part of the story where Luke tells what happens in the Upper Room the night before Jesus’ death. Jesus has instructed Peter and John to get everything ready for this * celebration.* Are you listening Holy People of God ? What has the Lord been telling you ? That an Explosion of Epic Proportions is coming soon ~~~~ That We will Dance with Him 40 days & 40 nights ~~~ * IN THE UPPER ROOM * JUST LIKE IN DAYS OF OLD * Lets Continue ~~~ They have followed his instructions and now the 12 along with Jesus are gathered around the table ready for this feast. As all the apostles sit down at the table and look to Jesus to begin the rituals and ceremonies of this Passover meal, Jesus says something unusual; at least it was unusual for Jesus. I couldn’t find any other place where Jesus says these words, or really anything like them. Luke 22:15 And he said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” The NIV says “eagerly desired,” which I don’t think captures the intensity of what Jesus really said. The King James Version states it more literally. KJV Luke 22:15 And he said unto them, “With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer:” The word is used twice, first as a noun and then as a verb; with desire I desire. This is fascinating; Luke uses this same word, desire, three other times in his Gospel. Look at the flavor of this word. Luke 15:16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. Luke 16:21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich mans table. Luke 17:22 Then he said to his disciples, The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.” This Greek word is translated in other passages not only as desire or longing but even lust, covet, and crave. And Luke uses it twice for emphasis! Jesus longed with longing, Jesus lusted with lust, ( Not the Impurity of Lust in the Flesh ) ( But He lusted after the Purity of the Spirit ) Jesus craved with a craving. I think you get the point. I would say Jesus really, really, really, wanted to eat this feast with them. And as I said, I think this is the only time the New Testament uses such strong words for a desire of Jesus. As the 12 sit there ready for the Passover Meal Jesus starts with this amazing statement of what he really wanted. And that raises an obvious question; why? The next day, the very next day, Jesus is going to be dying on the cross, why did he want to spend the last few hours, before all that, with his disciples observing the Passover feast? And I guess the more important question, for us is, what does this say about the importance of the Lord’s Supper for us? Does Jesus really want to share the supper with us too? That is the question of the morning and here is how we are going to answer it; we are going to keep reading. Jesus tells us why. Luke 22:16 “For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God. The Passover celebration, which Jesus is hosting in the Upper Room, has been a continuous Celebration among the Jews for well over 1,000 years; something like 1300 years. We as Americans, in contrast, have been celebrating the 4th of July for 230 years; pocket change. Imagine a celebration that we might observe that dates back to the 700s? It is hard for us to get our brains around such history. But here is the kicker, this 1300 year old feast was about to be fulfilled. It was about to reach its climax. It was about to complete its purpose. It was about to find its true meaning. Wow! In the days of Moses, before the 10th plague, the death of the first born, they killed lambs and placed their blood on the door posts. This kept God from taking the life of the firstborn sons. To celebrate their exodus from Egypt the Jews kept this celebration going for 1,300 years. Now Jesus, the new Lamb of God, the one who delivers us from bondage, the one who leads us in exodus out Satan’s slavery, is killed and his blood is placed over the lintel of our hearts. The Passover is fulfilled in Jesus! “I love it when a plan comes together & No one can stop it The plan Jesus began long before his birth finally reaches its finale! I can see why Jesus really, really wanted to put it all together on that night in that upper room. That is exciting but there is more. It wasn’t just the fulfillment that Jesus really, really desired. Let’s keep reading. NLT Luke 22:17-18 Then he took a cup of wine, and when he had given thanks for it, he said, Take this and share it among yourselves. For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come. Not only is Jesus looking backward at the original Passover feast, which has been going on for so long, he is starting something new. The NLT has, “share the cup among yourselves.” This new celebration is more than a remembrance of the past, it is the forming of a new community. It is as if Jesus is saying, I am not going to be physically present anymore to actually do this old feast with you, instead I am handing over to you something for you to share with others. Jesus desired with desire to do this feast because he knew it would be central to the formation of a new community, one which would be spread by these 12 men. One which would last for 2,000 years! This meal has connections to the past and connections to the present as it forms a new body. DID YOU READ THAT ? ALL OLD THINGS PASS AWAY * ALL THING BECOME NEW 2 Corinthians 5:17 ASV American Standard Version Wherefore if any man is in Christ, [he is] a new creature: the old things are passed away; behold, they are become new. For us it is the connection together of sharing, I bond of blood to each other in the absence of the incarnate Jesus. There is more. Let’s keep reading. Luke 22:19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. This new community would be formed on the given body of Jesus. Perhaps the 12 didn’t get the body part, in the upper room at that moment. LISTEN PEOPLE *** But in about 24 hours and then 3 days they got it. This new community is made possible by the death of Jesus. Jesus is the Lamb of God who saves the world. By his death we are delivered from death. By his death we are freed. By his death we become the body of Christ. So, we remember him! That is remarkable. Part of the Passover meal used unleavened bread. Before this, the host would talk about the unleavened bread as it reminded the Jews there hadnt been enough time for the bread to rise, so sudden was their Exodus from Egypt. On this occasion Jesus forever changed the meaning of the bread. Now, and forever after, it signified the broken body of our Lord. This meal became Jesus legacy. It was like he wanted to preach his own funeral. But there is still more. Luke 22:20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” As I understand it, in the days of Jesus, they didnt have white wine. All their wine was dark red, so it isnt surprising that wine is often used in the Bible as a symbol of blood. Listen Genesis 49:11 He will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. Deuteronomy 32:14 You drank the foaming blood of the grape. Revelation 14:19-20 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of Gods wrath. They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses bridles. When Jesus poured red wine into a cup at the Last Supper, he thought about his own blood that would be poured out the next day. In order to catch the new covenant, statement we need to go back to the “old covenant. Exodus 24:5-8 Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the LORD. Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he sprinkled on the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, ~~~ LISTEN UP PEOPLE TO THIS NEXT PART ~~~ We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey. Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words. WILL YOU LISTEN & OBEY EVERYTHING THE LORD IS ASKING ? HOW MANY EXCUSES DO YOU GIVE TO GOD ~~~ Im Tired * Im Sick * Im Exhausted * Im Cold, Im Mad * Im Im Im Jesus inaugurates a new covenant with blood, his own blood. Each time we drink of the cup we are saying as the people of old did, *** “We will do everything the Lord has said, we will obey.” **** Jesus began a new deal and that was exciting for Jesus! It was based upon grace and that was exciting to Jesus. But, guess what, there is more! Luke 22:21-23 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him. They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. In Mark and Matthew the betrayal prediction is before the bread and cup is shared. But Luke wants us to get a different point, so he places the betrayal prediction after the sharing. Luke wants us to know Judas was at the sharing. Don’t miss the significance; the Lord’s Supper is for sinners. It invites sinners to join Jesus. We don’t have to be perfect to partake, we simply must be forgiven. Isn’t that amazing? Joining Jesus at the table is not restricted to those who are perfect but it is an invitation for sinners to join in the redemption of the table. But that is not all, keep reading. There is a lot of stuff going on. Luke 22:24-27 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.” The Table redefines greatness. This is an important point for Jesus. He really wanted his disciples to get it. LISTEN UP ALL YOU PROUD PHARISEES Greatness around the Table is not found in power and authority, it is found in humility and service. STILL WANT TO COME TO THE UPPER ROOM ? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM THATS WHY YOU NEVER SHOWED UP In this new kingdom, Jesus is starting, greatness is found in being the one who serves others. As we eat the Supper we commit to kingdom greatness; serving. As we pass the plates to each other we are the waiters. We are the servants. We are saying greatness is in the giving of our lives for others. The Table defines greatness; serving. But there is one more thing Jesus says. I suspect it is why he was really excited about eating it with the disciples and why it is so important for us. Luke 22:28-30 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. This supper looks forward to an eternal kingdom when we will sit at the big banquet table with Jesus. It looks back to the past in the fulfillment of the Passover. It lives in the present in a new shared community of deliverance, given by the body and committed to in the blood, lived in by serving sinners but it also looks to the future when we will eat it with Jesus. WANT TO COME TO THE UPPER ROOM TO EAT WITH JESUS ? THEN YOU HAVE TO SERVE OTHERS FIRST Each bite of bread and sip of drink is a foretaste of a feast to come; our fellowship at the eternal table in heaven. The Bible speaks of drinking the cup with Jesus in the Kingdom of God; of sitting down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; of participating in the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. The tiny portion I taste on Sunday morning whets my appetite and reminds me of my invitation to the eternal Feast. Why did Jesus desire with desire to eat this feast? Jesus needed a taste of heaven before he went to the cross. He needed a reminder of what it was all about. He needed to taste the outcome of his death so he would have the courage to do it! Jesus wanted to give a taste of heaven to his apostles, so they could endure. Each time we share the Lord’s Supper we have a little taste of heaven, so we can endure. Jesus really, really wants to share his body and blood with you so you can taste heaven * IN THE UPPER ROOM * THEN THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL COME & FALL WITH FIRE AND YOU WILL DANCE WITH HIM 40 DAYS & 40 NIGHTS READY TO PUT ON YOUR WAITER UNIFORM ?
