December 6, 1969: Wrapping up their first US tour in three years,The Rolling Stones performed a free concert at the Altamont Speedway in northern California. 300,000 people show up. Santana, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Jefferson Airplane were the opening acts. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were supposed to play, but left before their set due to the growing violence of the crowd. During the Stones’ set 18 year-old Meredith Hunter was killed by a member of the Hell’s Angels after Hunter allegedly waved a revolver. The Angels had been hired to be the Stones security team during the concert.
