Dedicated to all soldiers.. Portraits framed in gold reflect silently on his dresser Medals of honour drape the walls His uniform still hangs in the closet. The badges on the arms are vibrant and colourful as the first day he wore this suit. The distinction that seperates him from man to soldier. The letters aged with time speak of his loneliness and true desires of being home. Written in muddy trenches, filled with the corpses of fellow soldiers. Death creeps in all corners. The coldness of his rifle burns in his hands. His heart tightens knowing the orders he must follow. The ache eased only slightly with the knowledge that he must do this for his family, for his friends, and for his country. He imagines a world of peace of endless happiness much like his long ago youth. Children playing joyously in the streets. Wives awaiting their husbands return, but overcome with gratitude to be safely home. Warm holiday moments celebrated with loved ones. A bomb shatters through the still night destroying any comforting thoughts of days gone by. The soldier awakes and carries out his mission. The war continues even as he falls. Memories flood his heart and mind. No longer is he trapped here on this deathly field. He is with his family once again, sharing those special moments that he once took for granted. In the darkness he grasps for one more moment of life and pens a quick letter of how he loves them so. How on his last breath he remembered them. As he leaves this world he views the future-the war has ended and freedom reigns once again. Thank You to all who served and still serve our Country!
