Defence and State lawyers will today give closing remarks in the case of Land Force Commander Pita Driti, who is charged with inciting mutiny and committing a seditious act to which he has pleaded not guilty. Driti is represented by Filimone Vosarogo, while the State is represented by Queens Counsel Audrey Campbell-Moffat. It is alleged Driti planned to remove the government in 2010 and kill Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum by Christmas of 2010. Driti told the Suva High Court last week that he was set up by Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz. He also stated that the initial option of removing the government was suggested by Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara and Aziz. He says the alleged plan was to stop Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in Sudan while he was on his official visit, capture him, cancel his passport, and get the support from the Kiwi and Australian defence forces with all the documentation to be done by Aziz. On Friday Judge Justice Paul Madigan questioned Driti on few matters, before closing. He asked Driti, that if it was a set up, why did he ask Aziz to explain about the plan? Driti explained that he did and Aziz quickly responded saying “not to worry about it as the plan is un-executable”. The alleged plan was to overthrow the government. Driti told the court this made him suspect he was being framed or setup. fbc.fj/fiji/15673/counsels-to-sum-up-in-driti’s-case
