Defining Antichrist The pope of Rome is well pleased to have his fellowmen who appear in his presence prostrate themselves before him, thus rendering obeisance to him one or more times. And he very graciously allows the faithful to kiss his hands and feet. The apostle Peter, who, according to papal tradition was the first pope, refused to receive homage from Cornelius, but said unto him, “Stand up; I myself also am a man.” (Acts 10:25,26). And when John, while on Patmos, would have worshiped at the feet of the angel who showed him the glorious things which are in store for the people of God, that heavenly being said: “See thou do it not; I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus; worship God.” (Rev. 19:20; 22:8,9). How unlike the popes of Rome. The apostle Peter said to the lame man, “Silver and gold have I none.” (Acts 3:6). Popes, the pretended successors of St. Peter, can say what he could not. Silver and gold they have in great abundance. For centuries Bible dictionaries agreed with the scriptures in identifying the spirit of antichrist. The following definitions of Antichrist are from two common Bible Dictionaries which represented the views of true Christians for centuries: “The word antichrist does not always mean openly opposed to Christ, but putting something in the place of Christ. Any person teaching any way to God, excepting through Christ, is Antichrist. Any person teaching any way of salvation, excepting through the blood of Christ, is Antichrist. John says that in his day, Now are there many antichrists. 1 John 2:18. The papal church, putting its traditions in the place of the Scriptures, putting the Virgin Mary, the saints, the Pope, the priest, good works, the mass, purgatory, etc., as the way of salvation, in place of salvation by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, is pre-eminently Antichrist.” (Peoples Dictionary Of The Bible, 1893, p. 26)
