Delaware County Council March 2014 Newsletter Potholes are a Deep Problem This winter, people on the East Coast endured a polar vortex. Now motorists are dodging gaping bunkers in a pothole vortex. Recognizing that municipalities are working hard to fix the extreme number of damaging and dangerous potholes on their roads, Delaware County Council is offering assistance through the countys Liquid Fuels fund. March 12, County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle announced Operation PAT, or Pothole Assistance for Taxpayers. Operation PAT is a grant program that enables each of the 49 municipalities to apply for Liquid Fuel Funds for the specific purpose of repairing potholes. To report a major pothole on a municipal roadway, motorists should call their municipal office. To report a pothole on a state road, people can call 1-800-FIX-ROAD. Council Hits the Road for a Public Evening Meeting Delaware County Council will head to Prospect Park Borough for a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, at the Prospect Park Borough Hall, 720 Maryland Avenue, Prospect Park. Chairman McGarrigle announced that Council will meet in Prospect Park as part of ongoing efforts to enhance communication with residents by taking their meetings out into the community. It is our hope that these evening meetings will encourage the residents of Prospect Park and surrounding communities to become more involved with local government and in turn, help us to communicate more directly with our residents, said McGarrigle. Officials Announce Effort to Equip Police with Life-saving Drug At a March 6 press conference, District Attorney Jack Whelan, Delaware County Council and Rep. Joe Hackett (R-Delaware) joined together at the office of the Delaware County medical examiner to pledge their support for legislation that would allow police officers in Pennsylvania to carry and administer naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, a drug that can reverse an opiate overdose and bring an unresponsive person back to life. Stewart, Director of the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA), received the 2014 Woman of Achievement Award at a reception hosted by the Delaware County Womens Commission, March 5. The Womens Commission selected Stewart as this years recipient of the award for embodying the qualities of this years theme, Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment, each and every day to her family, friends, job, community and church. The Delaware County Womens Commission presents two awards each year: the Woman of Achievement and the Hall of Fame award. The 2014 Hall of Fame Award was presented to the friends of Dr. Penelope Pether, who was a legal scholar, educator, and mentor. Health Advisory Board to Hold a Public Meeting, March 26 Delaware County Council and the Delaware County Health Advisory Board will open its March meeting to the public, at 8:30 a.m. March 26 in the County Council Public Meeting Room on the first floor of the Government Center Building in Media. As part of its continued outreach, the Health Advisory Board invites all municipal health officers to attend the morning meeting along with public health stakeholders and members of the community. The March 26 meeting is the first Health Advisory Board meeting in 2014 that is open to the public, with the second public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Animal Safety During Disasters Begins With You! Delaware County residents interested in volunteering to help animals during disasters or prepare your own pet for a disaster, are invited to attend an orientation meeting and presentation for the Delaware County Animal Response Team, 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, in the main building of Penn State Brandywine, room 203, 25 Yearsley Mill Road, Media. The Delaware County Animal Response Team (DelCART) is a volunteer organization that works with Delaware County Emergency Management and the American Red Cross to provide emergency pet sheltering during severe weather and other disasters.
