Delhi Metro – A great feeling Yesterday, I took metro from sector 16, Noida to City Centre – a very short ride of 10 minutes. Like always in the past, I felt very happy. As a matter of fact, every time, I take a metro ride, two completely different emotions overwhelm me – one takes me 20 years back, makes me nostalgic and reminds me of our daily metro ride in Tokyo and the second, fills me with a great deal of pride and happiness. My heart swells with pride when I compare the quality of service by our very own desi metro with that provided by their Japanese counterparts – the best metro in the world (I am not being a show off- I have travelled in metros of many developed countries like Hongkong, Singapore, London, New York, but Tokyo is the best). Delhi Metro is on par with the best – the same clean & tidy platform/station buildings, the same glistening trains and the same clockwork punctuality. But what is more heartening is the discipline we Indians – notorious for our wayward ways, display on metro platforms and inside the vessel. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Delhi Metro is a shining example of the best in India and shows what we are capable of - immaculate project planning, perfect project execution and flawless project operation & maintenance. Delhi metro also demolishes the myth that we Indians are made differently and have different standards of adherence to schedule/timelines, cleanliness, hygiene and individual behaviour. Metro experience proves that we are in no way inferior to anybody in such matters provided we offer world class facilities and instil a sense of pride in national projects and national assets. All those who were and are involved in the conceptualisation, execution and operations & maintenance of metro deserve our gratitude – the political establishment, our officials/bureaucracy, our technocrats, our engineers and above all, millions of workers who toiled so hard to make it possible. The nation will always remain grateful to the team led by Mr Sreedharan. Wish Delhi Metro all the very best. Wish all the projects in India emulate Delhi Metro, then we will not have the sorry spectacle of more than 300 infra projects involving an investment of more than Rs 10 lac crore being stuck in administrative rigmarole.
