Delighted to join our 35 graduands at the Leaders in Education Programme Graduation Dinner last week. As Singapore moves forward, I hope to see three shifts in the way we learn and work: first, a stronger emphasis on skills and applied learning, so that our students can use knowledge in the real-world context to solve problems and to create innovations; second, a desire for continual and lifelong learning, instead of being frontloaded in the first 20-odd years of our lives; and third, a respect for every person and every job. Each person has his own interests, temperament, aptitude and learning style, and each person can be a valuable and valued member of this society. Our teachers and school leaders are models of lifelong learning and respect, and your example can leave a lasting impact on your students. You can help grow the whole teaching community too. I hope more teachers and school leaders will take younger educators under their wing. Together, let us build a culture of teachers growing teachers, leaders growing leaders, where each person finds every opportunity to mentor, encourage, and build up those around us.
