Delta Engages 1,200 Environmental Marshal By Felix Igbekoyi Asaba — DETERMINED to keep the entire Delta State clean, the state government has engaged 1,200 environmental marshals to execute the project after carrying out public enlightenment and enforcement of the state environmental laws. Commissioner for Environment, Frank Omare, who addressed the marshals on Tuesday in Asaba, said the young men and women, who would resume work next week, would see to the cleanliness of the environment and arrest those that litter the environment with dirt. He warned them against extorting the people at the detriment of a clean environment, tasking them to do the work, which they were assigned to do effectively, regretting that people dump dirt indiscriminately along the streets and in some hidden places, which is unhygienic to the people and the environment. The commissioner said Asaba, the state capital, would be used to test run the exercise, maintaining that the marshals would be given portions or areas to manage, just as he assured that he would personally go on supervision to know if the marshals are working effectively or not. He vowed that any of them found wanting or his portion dirty would be sacked instantly without pity. Omare said there should not be compromise or bribe taking when doing the job and that the marshalls should take the job more serious on environmental sanitation days, assuring them that there would be vehicles to arrest people while the office of the Attorney General of the state is ready to prosecute offenders. The commissioner said with the ongoing incinerator project both in Asaba and Warri, the process of ensuring a cleaner Delta State has just begun, saying the multimillion naira integrated waste management facilities are capable of processing 1000 tonnes of waste daily without polluting the environment, thereby closing existing dump sites in the state. Your performance would determine if any of you would get permanent job or not. If I offend the environment, humiliate me. We must do it well. You have to start from somewhere. The little job you have, you must take it serious, Omare stated.
