Delta gets new Speaker today … As Ochie formally resigns A new Speaker for the Delta State House of Assembly may emerge today (Tuesday) following the resignation of the former Speaker, Honourable Victor Ochie, at the weekend. The circumstance surrounding the resignation of Honourable Ochie which takes effect from today, the Nigerian Tribune gathered, was webbed around his governorship ambition for 2015, just as caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the House have met to choose a new Speaker from Delta North, when the Assembly resumes sitting. Honourable Ochie was said to have thrown in the towel when it became obvious that 19 of the 29 members had allegedly signed a document to impeach him, while all the paraphernalia of office including security attached to him have been withdrawn. However, Honourable Ochie was yesterday, at the signing into law the 2014 budget by the state governor Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, just as he told reporters that as of the time of the signing ceremony, he was still the Speaker until the resignation is formally made public. The 2014 Appropriation was jacked up from N391billion to N451billion by the state House of Assembly, and according to the state governor Dr Uduaghan, concentration on its implementation would largely be on completion of ongoing capital projects. ADVERTISEMENT At the Assembly Complex, Asaba, on Monday, there were mixed-feelings about the speaker’s resignation as some workers allegedly jubilated while others ‘‘mourned” his exit as Speaker, perhaps because of his landmark achievements and restoration of confidence in the assembly and workforce.
