Demian Maia has had to withdraw from his Aug 23rd fight with Mike Pyle due to a staph infection. His manager Eduardo Alonso just gave us this statement on what happened: This is the first time in Demians UFC career that he has to step out of a fight, and it was a tough moment. We tried everything we could to stay on the card as Demian wanted to fight but it wasnt possible and in the end its his health that was on the line. An injury in his shoulder led to a serious staph infection in it, and eventually he had to be hospitalized Tuesday to take care of the infection and not let it spread and things got even worse. We are looking at some days hospitalized still, and lots of days of meds ahead until close to weigh-ins day so there was no other option but to heal him first and then carry on with his fighting career. Hopefully he will be good to train again and free of meds around August 20th, and now we will take it day by day until he is completely well again.
