Democracy and Capitalism -- ingrained traditions Democracy: tends towards equality. Everyone has equal rights under the law. Everyones vote or opinion has equal value. Everyones life and liberty has equal value. Everyone is equally important. Capitalism: tends towards inequality -- with EXTREMELY wide discrepancies regarding money and social prestige. Some, looking for work, remain unemployed. Some expend tons of energy and earn minimum wage. Others, through luck and skill, earn $billions ... but also increase the total wealth of the society. Some cant pay the mortgage. Others own seven or eight houses. Some use the food bank. Others own the bank. Two powerful social traditions -- at loggerheads. Democrats tend to support social equality -- Republicans capitalistic freedom. How to reconcile?
