Democracy is what I have conceived from the recent pay hikes. I don’t have any interest to join political parties but as a concerned citizen of Bhutan I like to mention few words that people are not happy with the recent proposed pay hikes. Democracy in Bhutan is young and especially the parliamentarians have to keep in mind that elected representatives are held by the people to serve the country and people, not to serve them. Rather, new government (PDP) has showed us the true meaning of politics which is dirty in nature.Bhutanese citizens are not fools, even the farmers in the far flung villages understands that how democracy works in Bhutan now? First and foremost, Bhutanese People are not happy because PDP government did not fulfill many of the 100 day’s pledges. Instead of working on it, they are fulfilling their own perks and privileges. This is how people have conceived PDP government as a self -goal orientated government. The recent pay hikes between civil servants and minister’s shows a huge gap of salary percentage which clearly indicates a political bias. What is the point of increasing salary where most of the civil servants are not able to cover the inflation rate? The top priority of any government is to the serve the people and country. But in Bhutan now things are changing drastically because the parliamentary privileges are becoming their first priority. This is how new government with new ideas is trying to set out the bad foundation in our vibrant young democracy. I am still wondering why the office of Pay Commission didnt narrow the gap between the higher ranking officials and others. Nevertheless, I am hoping against hope that today the National Council will not endorse on the proposed pay hike and they will make a fair distribution of hike in salary percentage.
