Democratic Alliance Press Statement by George Michalakis DA District Municipal Councillor, Lejweleputswa No water in Winburg: Day 4 Release: Immediate 28 January 2014 The Free State water crisis continues to worsen as water taps in Winburg is set to remain dry for the fourth consecutive day today. Meanwhile, the Masilonyana Municipality has cited everything from pump failures to electric panels and faulty breakers as the cause for technical failures at the local water plant, except accepting responsibility for its own failure at managing the municipality’s infrastructure properly. On a site visit on Saturday, the DA found a pump motor, reportedly uninstalled since October 2013, with no pump. Only one of the two pumps at the facility is in a working condition. The facility hasnt been maintained for years. It functions on a break-then-replace basis. This causes frequent water disruptions, sometimes lasting for weeks on end. Winburg virtually has no water reserves, the town is left dry as soon as a technical difficulty of any nature arise. The municipality has been aware for several months that only one of the two pumps needed to pump water from the local spring into the towns dam is operational. The dam is currently at 5% capacity. This means that should the town receive sufficient rain, only about half the available water would be pumped into the dam to boost the town’s water reserve. Much needed water is lost to the nearby Vet River and Erfenis dam. The ANC-led Masilonyana municipality holds no concern for the wellbeing of residents. The ANC’s lack of leadership and vision continues to deprive residents of their basic Human Rights.
