Demolition of The Wee Cot-UWI (Mona) The aging building dubbed The Wee Cot. located on the UWI (Mona) campus was demolished last week to make way for a new building. For 15 years this charming building (housed the operation of the Violence Prevention component of the Institutes present programme). This programme catered to individual children and families as well as small and large groups of children and adolescents from schools in St. Catherine and Kingston and St. Andrew. Interns and volunteers were mainly from the various faculties of UWI but there were interns from as far a field as Germany,New Zealand, Russia, and London. Students from the region including Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago also spent some time with the programme,Prior to its use as a centre for children and families, then as an oureach project of the social work unit, the building was used by the social Welfare Training Centre as a site for teaching social work students how families can live with dignity ,mindful of public health issues.Historically, Walter Rodney of Guyana was said to have used this building while he was on campus. One of the staffers expressed the view that the demolition was like losing an old friend.See album-Memories of Wee Cot.
