Dense breast tissue is common in younger women. Dense breast tissue absorbs more radiation during mammograms compared with fatty breast tissue. Therefore the accuracy to detect breast cancer in dense breasts is reduced. Women with dense breasts have a modestly increased risk of breast cancer and reduced sensitivity to detect the cancer. In women who have dense breasts, you should get a digital mammogram since it is more effective to screen for cancer. States such as Texas require health providers to inform women that if they have dense breasts, they should consider supplemental tests such as ultrasound to help detect abnormalities however current evidence does not demonstrate meaningful outcome benefits. So even though the evidence is not there to recommend additional testing, we are required by law to notify you, so you can make the decision.
