Your body is supposed to make this from an amino acid found in the diet called l-tryptophan. Sometimes you dont get enough of that in order to make enough 5-HTP. From this substance the body then makes serotonin (mood elevating neurotransmitter), and from serotonin it makes melatonin (hormone that shuts brain down for sleep).
