Depression affects more people than we realize, and when it - TopicsExpress

Depression affects more people than we realize, and when it results in suicide, many, many more people are affected by the loss of someone they care about. When someone the stature of Robin Williams takes his life, the impact is felt on a massive scale by all of us who were touched by his work. Depression can have many causes, including brain chemistry reasons, but Ive seen it described as an incredible, indescribable feeling of isolation, separation, of being completely alone and utterly without hope. I look at the world nowadays and I wonder if we are all moving in that direction. It makes me wonder if the anger, political polarization, ideology and religious battles, greed, school shootings and other random acts of violence, me first, Im right-youre wrong, quiet desperation and not-so-quiet desperation that seems to be the constant noise in our environment is pushing us all toward some abyss of annihilation, whether by our own hand or the hand of another. It seems the era of civility that I grew up in has gone completely out the window. But I know this: if we are to turn this around, we have to look past all things that appear to separate us and see the humanity in each of us. Inside each of us is a child of a Creator who loves all his creations without regard to color, doctrine, religion, nationality, gender, gender preference, and whatever other reasons that we invent to keep us apart. Kindness, compassion, forgiveness, generosity, service to others and Love are needed now more than ever. The messages from antiquity and throughout the ages telling us to Love one another are what we need. No one can do this for us - not God, Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Mohammed, Confuscious, Lao-Tzu or anyone else. WE have to CHOOSE to Love each other. I pray we will. So … how about if we all decided to do random acts of kindness, Pay It Forward, smile at someone who is frowning, make time to spend with someone who is lonely, reach out to someone we know is suffering, with no expectation of anything in return. Why? Love is its own reward. God Bless us all.
