Depression is a terrible state of being I know, because Ive been there. A person can seem to have it all, accomplishments, money and even fame. And yet, there is something missing. Something unnameable It feels like a deep and unfathomable emptiness. It is a terrible feeling of isolation and disconnection from everything and everyone. Life seems flat and pointless. Depression also carries a stigma that keeps people from reaching out when they need help. Depressed people do not need to hear that they should snap out of it. Depressed people do not need to be told that they have no reason to feel the way they do. What they do need is kindness and understanding just like with any other disease. Sometimes they need medication temporarily, to help them through. Sometimes they need help with everyday tasks for the time being. And dealing with a depressed person sometimes requires a lot of patience. Can we make this tragedy a wake up call? Can we somehow make it okay to be able to reach out when we need help? Can we stop judging and stigmatizing depression? Can we stop treating it like its not real because we cant see it in a blood test? Can we be the kind of friend who will be there for our friends who need help? - RIP Robin Williams
