Derek Prince: 1Cor 7 talks about the importance of counsel of parents in giving away a daughter to a Christian marriage. Today, it is just a formality but the fact is that the parents, the father primarily, has the responsibility of giving away his daughter. Traditional? But…No society in recent history has the most number of marriages that failed than contemporary society. Wouldn’t it be helpful to turn back to that old-fashioned book, the Bible? The responsibility of parents in connection with the marriage of their children: 1. Acknowledge your responsibility to see that your children make good marriage. Don’t hide behind contemporary culture because God will still hold you accountable. 2. Pray for the mates of your children from birth. There’s nothing that limits your prayers. 3. Set an example that will give your children a standard. Live out your married life in such a way that your children will know what marriage really can mean and won’t want to settle for something less. Children have a very strong impression. Those who grow up in happy marriages will not be enticed to settle for something less. 4. Maintain close, ongoing contact with your children. Be willing to listen instead of lecturing. 5. Be understanding but firm. Be sympathetic but don’t give way on basic principles. Don’t concede on basic matters of principle. They might rebel but in the long run, they’ll respect you for out of your love and concern for them that you stood by basic matters of principle. *There is scarcely anything more decisive in life than the blessing of the parents on their children. Covet the blessing of your parents. Do everything you can to gain their blessing – may require patience, submission…cultivate the right attitude toward your parents. Ephesians 6:1-3 – obey your parents - Honour your mother and father which is the first commandment with a promise that it may go well with you and you may enjoy long life on earth.
