Deriving Gothic words directly from Proto-Indo-European: So - TopicsExpress

Deriving Gothic words directly from Proto-Indo-European: So coming up with Gothic words is not really that easy when theres no Proto-Germanic equivalent. In order to get the etymology somewhat correct, you have to know how Proto-Germanic formed from PIE. Words are like puzzles, piece together the start and the end of the word, and Anulaibaz, this may help you create more Proto-Germanic words ;) (i.g. PIE *méy- and the suffix *-trom, as in *méytrom agreement, in Goth. it would be *mei- and *-þr = *meiþr respectively. In Proto-Germanic it would have been *mīþrą. PIE éy > ī > ei, gh > g > g, bh > b > b, dh > d > d, oy > ai > ái, -trom > -þrą > þr, -tlom > -tlą > -tl, ay > ai > ái, ē > e > i, -os > -az > -s, -yos > -ijaz > -jis, ghw > gw > gw, t > þ > þ, ó > a > a, ḱ > h > h and ā́ (*swā́dus) > ō (*swōtuz) > aú (*swaútus). There are many other changes. Here are some words I derived from PIE with no PG equivalent, but Ill list what they would be: *méytrom > *meiþr (agreement) (*mīþrą) *strēnwos > *strinus (active) (*strēnwaz) (its a u-stem because I doubt it would form as *strinws) *ḱroghos > *hrags (Adams apple) (*hragaz) *déykos > *táigs (address) (*taigaz) *prokos > *frags (advanced) (*fragaz) *kighrós > *higar (agitated) (*higraz) (I looked on Wiktionary and there is not any Germanic descendant of the suffix *-rós, but Im confident its *-raz) *oghlos > *agls (annoyance) (*aglaz) *dhēlyos > *diljis (baby) (*delijaz) *worgyom > *warki (cannabis) (*warkiją) (the *-yóm suffix is only shown up in Wiktionary in the word *h₂ōwyóm, which I think would go with the PG suffix of *-iją.) *bhósos > *bas (barefoot) (*bazaz or *basaz) *práyghestō > *fráigisþa (at-hand) (*fraigisþô) *kélwonom > *hiluns (bath-tub) (*hailunaz/*hilunaz) *lubhros > *lubar (bast) (*lubraz)
