He chose not share any details on his 2nd, 3rd or 4th marriages. Johnnys birth certificate reads, October 30, 1927. Date of filing report is October 31, 1928. Date of filling is November 08, 1928. It is a South Dakota birth certificate. Supposedly born in Browns Valley, Minnesota. His older Pearl was born on April 2, 1927. And baptized on June 14, 1927. Johnny stated that he was born in 1927. According to the Court House in Sisseton, his birth date reads 1927. But the year is erased and the year wrote in a different color ink. It was known in the family, that Alma Johnson had went to the Court House before they moved to Portland and changed some of her childrens birth dates around to show that Johnny was old enough (16) to work in the ship yard in Oregon. Page 25 of 190 Friday, November 15, 2013 11:18:56 AM Descendants of Torre Generation 6 (cont) Johnny was in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He spent most of his life in San Francisco, California and Las Vagas, Nevada. Was disabled. He died in 1997 and is buried in South Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada. He chose not to be buried in the family plot in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery. He said it was to cold for him up north. 12. John H. Johnson Sr-6 (Hans Nikolai-5, Johan Pedersen-4, Torleivson-3, Tollef Torresen-2, Father-1) was born on 01 Sep 1883 in Bolkhaugen Farm, , Skatval, Nedre Stjordal, Nord Trondelag, Norway. He died on 29 Nov 1959 in Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota. Notes for John H. Johnson Sr: General Notes: John emigrated from Skatval, Nord Trondelag, Norway in 1891 when he was almost 9 years old. John became a naturalized citizen in 1908. John, his wife Alma, 2 daughters, infant daughter Mildred Irene, Magna MaggieJohnson Peterson, son Henry , Almas half brother, Engebret Johnson, Johns mother Petrine, his grand parents, Peder and Metta Floan and several of Johns grand babies are all buried in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, One Road Township, rural Sisseton, Roberts County, South Dakota. The country church has been moved and torn down. Bethel Lutheran Church records are stored at Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, South Dakota. Information on the John H. Johnson family was provided by the following; Lillian Johnson Swanson, George Johnson, Pearl Johnson Hendershott, Mildred Dullam Peterson, Allan Sonny Johnson. The census records of Roberts County Drywood Lake Township for 1920. From the application for marriage and the marriage license, Circuit Court of Roberts County, state of South Dakota. Dated 16 May 1903. From Film # 1293442 (could possibly be #1283442), page 18, Skatval, Nord Trondelag, Norway. Church records 1880 - 1900, folio # 8, entry # 23, 1883. Johns name is listed as Johan on the church baptismal records. There are several sponsors listed for John, but it was very difficult to read the hand witting. Two of the names look like Vinge. Lillian Johnson Swanson reports that her father and mother played together as children in Norway. When John and Alma were married their witness were listed as her half brother, Engebret Johnson and his father Hans N. Johnson. John and Alma had a baby girl who died at the age of 6 weeks of Cholera Marble (diarrhea). Not sure of her name, Lillian states that it was Mildred Irene, but did not know the year she was born. Martin Johnsons son Allan Sonny, lists her as Mildred, born 1911. That would have made her born between Martin and Marge. That would fit in with their having a child about every two years. In searching the record of Roberts County Court House, there is no birth or death record of this baby. In Bethel Lutheran Church records (stored at Peever Lutheran in Peever) there is no baptismal recorded for a Mildred Irene. But did find baptismal records for 2 Mathilda Gunilla Johnson. Baptized in different years. So do not know if one of these Mathildas could be this baby or not. Checked Bethel Lutheran Cemetery Records and there is no record of any Johnson baby buried in the cemetery. The cemetery Association Secretary stated that they did not have very good records when they took over. They had to take information from the tombstones in the cemetery. She stated that the members of Bethel Lutheran Church were Norwegian emigrants who could not read or write English. They hired a local man who could read and write in both Norwegian and English, to record their information in the church and cemetery records and to record the information at the court house in Sisseton. Well he certainly had good intentions, but he did not follow through very well. And when he Page 26 of 190 Friday, November 15, 2013 11:18:56 AM Sisseton. Well he certainly had good intentions, but he did not follow through very well. And when he passed away he took the information with him. So not very much information got recorded. Which made it very difficult to find documentation of the information handed down in the family. The location of this 6 week old babies grave is unknown. But her younger sister Lillian, recalls being told that it was in the family plot with her parents and other family members. George and Sally Johnson possible have 2 baby girls, Maggie baby girl from her first marriage, all buried in the family plot all who are not recorded in the church or cemetery records. John and Alma lived on her half brother Engbret Johnsons farm. It was in both Engbret and Almas names. Most of it was on the Drywood Lake bed. The lake was dry for forty years and full of water for forty years. John was a farmer and a laborer. According to Lillian, after she and Hank Swanson were married in 1937, they stayed with her folks on the farm. Hank worked for a house mover for 1 year without wages, to pay to have the farm house moved in Sisseton. The house was rented out after John passed away and it burned down in the 1960s. All that is left of the old farm place now is a large rock. The land was sold and is now farm land when it is not under water. John, Alma along with their two youngest children, Pearl and Johnny moved to Portland, Oregon in the spring of 1943, to work in the ship yards there. John was sick most of the time they were there and was in the hospital, when Alma died of a massive stroke in August of 1943. Thanks to the efforts of Lillian Johnson Swanson for raising funds to put a permanent markers on her parents, John and Alma, her brother Henry, sister Maggie, uncle Engbret. It is one long granite stone that covers all four graves. Maggie is between her father and her brother Henry, so she is under the stone marked Johnson, even though her married name is Peterson. The birth year for John H. is incorrect. It reads 1885 and it should be 1883 as he was baptized in 1883 in Skatval, according to church records there. Maggies death year is incorrect, it should be 1947 instead of 1946. Lillian also put single stone marker for her uncle Engbret Johnson. Through the efforts of Lillian, the VA issued a bronze marker for her younger brother Bennie T. Johnson, who was lost in World War II. His marker was placed in the family plot at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery. We apologize for the errors in the dates, but we did the best we could with what information we had at that time. Bethel Lutheran Cemetery Association depends on donations for its upkeep. Any donations would be appreciated to help care of the graves of our Johnson family ancestors. From the information submitted, the descendants of John H. and Alma Johnson are 14 children, 55 grand children, 150 great grand children, 110 great great grand children. With reports of more great and great-great grand children on the way. Know there is more descendants out there that were not submitted by choice or were not able to find them. Obituary for John H. Amalie (Alma) Vinge daughter of Petter Andreas Johanson and Jorgine Annaniasdatter was born on 10 Jul 1884 in Bolkhaug, Skatval, Nedre Stjordalen, Nord Trondelag, Norway. She died on 31 Aug 1943 in Portland, Multnomah Co, Oregon. Notes for Amalie (Alma) Vinge: General Notes: 1. Almas name may have been Amalie. On the passenger list of the steamer, Alma is listed as Amalia Vinge and the line above her list Engebret Johnson her half brother. So he returned to Skatval and accompanied her to America on April 17, 1901. digitalarkivet 2. Alma was born in Skatval, Norway. She emigrated in April 1901 to Starbuck, Minnesota. Then after marrying John H. Johnson, they homesteaded in Roberts County, South Dakota on Nov. 10, 1903. She was naturalized in 1908. 3. She only had one relative in the United States, a half brother, Engebret Johnson. He was born in 1875. Died in rural Sisseton, Roberts County, South Dakota in 1935. Both Alma and her brother are buried in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Drywood Lake Township, Rural Sisseton, South Dakota. 4. Alma died of Apoplexy (Heart Attack) in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Age 59. Her burial permit is #3208, Roberts County Burial Record Book # 2, page 120, Roberts County Register of Deeds Office. 5. Could not find any record of Almas baptism in the Skatval Church records on microfilm. In her obituary it states that she was born in Skatvold (the old way of spelling Skatval). No mention of her parents names. Going to look for Amalie Vinge next. Have found her parents, grandparents & etc. Thanks to Gene Nelson of Stillwater, Minnesota. Have a copy of her birth record on LDS Film. 6. Through family members of Julia Johnson Gross, they had a piece of paper with the information of Almas older brother Engebrets baptismal information written in both English and Norwegian. When looking in the Leinstrand, Nord Trondelag, Norway, parish records the same information was found there. It list the mother of Engebret as the servant girl, Ingeborg Larsdatter Kattam. The father as the bachelor Peter Johansen Holand of Stordalen. Leinstrand and Stordalen are small town/villages near Skatval. Ingeborg Larsdatter Kattem may possible be the mother of Alma. Also with Engebrets baptismal paper, Starbuck, Minnesota is written. This possible was Almas destination when she emigrated to America. Engebret went back to Norway and accompanied Alma to Minnesota. She left her mother, brothers and sisters in Norway and was never able to return to visit them. According to her daughter, Lillian Johnson Swanson she was a school teacher in Norway. 7. There is some conflicting information on the spelling of Almas maiden name. According to her and John H. Johnsons application for marriage license and the marriage license in Roberts County, South Dakota, the spelling appears to be Veingge. The brides signature is signed Alma Winge. Her daughter Lillian states that her mother could not read or write very well in English when she first came to America. John could only write his name. The hand witting on the application and the license looks similar, possibly filed out by the same person, possibly a clerk of the Circuit Court and that the person Page 28 of 190 Friday, November 15, 2013 11:18:56 AM Descendants of Torre Generation 6 (cont) similar, possibly filed out by the same person, possibly a clerk of the Circuit Court and that the person may have wrote down the phonetic spelling of Vinge as it sounded when she said her name. 8. In searching microfilm of Skatval census and church records, found it spelled as Vinge. It appeared in one record to be an area or a parish. Did find the spelling Vinge as sponsor names, could not make out the first names as the witting was very hard to read. So going on how it was spelling in the Skatval records, this is how it will be spelled in this book. 9. Alma was a housewife after her marriage. Do not have any information if she worked outside of the home. She did purchase a knitting machine for $75.00 on 16 December 1924 (a tidy sum in those days). According to the contract she signed, she agreed to knit hosiery for $2.25 per dozen pairs. There is a copy of the guarantee and the contract. Do not know how many pairs of hose she knitted with the machine, or what happened to the knitting machine. She did volunteer knitting work for the Red Cross during World War II. 10. The minister, Hans Grimelund who confirmed Alma, in the 1865 Norwegian census, lived in Steigen in Nordland, Norway. Steigen parish records as early as 1868 are available on LDS microfilms and there appears to be published history/genealogy books for that area - Steigen Bygdebok, 2 volumes by Svein Fygle. She died in 1911 in Sisseton, Roberts County, South Dakota. Notes for Mildred Irene Johnson: General Notes: Mildred Irene is buried in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, One Road Township, rural Roberts County, South Dakota. There is no marker on her grave or any information in the cemetery records. There is some confusion on what her name may have been. There is no record of her birth or death in Bethel Lutheran Church records. There is two baptisms listed for Matilda Gunilla Johnson for two Page 29 of 190 Friday, November 15, 2013 11:18:56 AM Descendants of Torre Generation 6 (cont) Lutheran Church records. There is two baptisms listed for Matilda Gunilla Johnson for two separate years. But no death record for either. No one seems to know why there are two Matildas listed in the baptismal records, unless one could have been the baby girl who died and her given name was Matilda, not Mildred.
