Description Pride Rock Tosas are according to the standard for type. Our dogs are extremely athletic, with 140+ pound dogs leaping some six to seven feet in the air. We’ve had Red, Black, Red with white on chest and toes, Red with white socks, Fawn, Black with white on chest and toes, Black mantle, Apricot, and our lines carry Brindle. The only colors our dogs haven’t yet produced are Black w/Rust, and Piebald. Temperament Pride Rock Tosas are born and raised for the best temperaments possible. We socialize, train, and of course love our dogs to achieve proper behavior. We understand that you can only breed so much into a dog’s temperament, the rest is up to the one raising the dog. The key word is responsibility. Good dogs don’t just happen, it takes lots of hard work and dedication. We see to it that every one of our dogs have the best start possible before leaving our home. Pride Rock Tosas are also the biggest characters you’ve ever met! Silly, Goofy, Playful, Shy, Sensitive, Obedient, Intelligent, Composed, Boisterous, Gentle, and “Bouncy” are all words that could describe any one of our dogs at any given moment. They make perfect house dogs, content to lay at your feet, but outside they transform into superb athletes! One thing is certain: If you get a Tosa, you’re bound to see it all! Height, Weight Pride Rock Tosa sizes are as follows: Females: 27 inches at the shoulder and up. 100 – 140 lbs. Average is 28 in. and ~110lbs. Males: 28 inches at the shoulder and up. 120+ lbs. Average is 30 in. and ~150lbs. Our Tosas tend to have large, solid frames, so they’ll look short due to how thick and deep chested they are. The females also tend to look heavier than they are due to their large frames. All our dogs look like well shaped athletes, not overloaded and nonfunctional, yet by no means “skinny.” Pride Rock Tosas are best described as “They’ve got it where it counts. Nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else.” Health Problems and Life Expectancy At Pride Rock Tosas we boast a perfect health record! That means at least thus far we’ve never lost a single dog to unnatural causes. Of course, some have gotten sick and we lost them, but it wasn’t anything hereditary. What this means is that all Pride Rock Puppies carry that same solidified bill of health that has characterized our lines to this point! Our original Tosa dogs have yet to pass on, and at six years old they’re still wearing our puppies out! With a proper diet and regular exercise, Pride Rock Tosas should live well past the average life expectancy of 10 years. Just like great temperaments, a dog’s life expectancy is most greatly affected by lifestyle rather than breeding. With responsible owners, Pride Rock Tosas thrive to live to a ripe old age! Living Conditions and Exercise Our Tosas are primarily outside dogs because we believe they’re much happier with the room to stretch out and the health benefits seem to show both physically and mentally. They are house trained and we bring them in if there’s inclement weather, but they really enjoy the outdoors! With proper, regular exercise, Pride Rock Tosas are notably placid indoors. They tend to follow you wherever you go and lay down at your feet when you get there. They can fool you because indoors they give the impression of an old hound dog dozing at your feet near the fireplace. Indoors they may have you believing they don’t even need exercise but when you get them outside, you won’t recognize your Tosa! They are the perfect dog for energy: Quiet in the house, and relentless outside. They can literally go all day, but they don’t have to. Just a walk around the block? Great! 20 mile mountain bike trail? Perfect! The real key is in how you choose your pup. See our page on choosing your puppy and learn about how to set you and your new puppy up for success! Grooming Tosa Grooming is much like the general description provided. On a healthy diet, there’s no grooming fees, no bags of fur, no teeth brushing, no bad breath, no pooped out yard, no daily baths needed, these dogs are very hardy. Unless your dog meets a skunk, an occasional brushing to remove dead and loose hair is all that is needed to keep the coat looking good. A Final Word… Tosas are truly a limitless breed. They can outmuscle the strongest at weight pulling, bite the hardest and obey to the letter in schutzhund, outrun the marathoner, sit the sweetest as a Thera-pet, or whatever you can think of! In the right hands, these dogs will excel wherever placed so when wondering what you’d like to do with your Pride Rock Tosa, let your imagination be your guide and watch these dogs soar!
