Desde el Fuego The Fire Starting April 12, 2014 the most destructive fire in Chile’s known history raged through the hills that border the port city of Valparaíso, taking over a week to get under control. During this time, over 12,000 people watched as 3000 of their homes and the belongings inside were destroyed. The fires left over 500 people injured, 15 dead, and now, thousands displaced. The Organization From collecting and distributing donated items to organizing benefit events, Patio Volantín has been working tirelessly to help the thousands in need. Patio Volantín is a self-run community center on cerro Panteón of Valparaíso. The mission of Patio Volantín since its creation around five years ago has been to foster a space where people from the area could come together to participate in an open dialogue of ideas, skills, art, and music. While studying abroad last semester, I was lucky enough to attend some of the workshops, concerts, and cultural events, which were donation-based. I was completely inspired, seeing it was a place that was truly committed to the continuance of the porteño culture and to the betterment of the neighborhood. The Soup Kitchen Project One of the most important relief projects Patio Volantín is currently working on is the creation of soup kitchens in the areas affected by the fires: Massive amounts of displaced people are staying in temporary makeshift shelters in schools and churches, without access to their own kitchens or a place to store food to feed themselves and their families. The soups kitchens that are being created will help feed those who have lost everything in the fire, and will give them at least one less thing to worry about so they can focus on the very difficult steps forward. Your Donation Any donation, big or small, would be greatly appreciated and put to good use; personally knowing proponents of the center and having visited myself many times, I have the utmost confidence in the integrity of the organization and their ability to help the community. I have been in contact with the organizers of Patio Volantín and the soup kitchen project, and they have been striving to achieve the utmost transparency in the donation process, including sending receipts to donors of how the funds are being used. - See more at: youcaring/nonprofits/soup-kitchens-for-victims-of-valpara-so-fires/169259#sthash.DfscQxVO.dpuf
