Desiree Hanvy There is a movement across the nation of parents opting out of standardized tests. They have had enough of their children being constantly tested by the state for purposes other than educational ones. Some Louisiana parents are joining them. We shouldn’t fight to make the gov’t agree with us about how to educate our children. They NEVER had the right to do so from the start. In a way, arguing with them, lends credence to their power. When you find yourself asking for your rights back…it means that you are talking to someone who took them WITHOUT your permission.--Charlie Morris, NC parent A post about testing from a Louisiana teacher: 8th grade ACT is called Explore. It is this week for us; next week is LEAP Phase One; in two weeks is LEAP Phase 2, then after Spring Break we pilot PARRC. No time to teach... Parent letter to Louisiana school district opting her children out of PARCC pilot tests (names have been removed): Dear Mr. XXXX, Please be advised that I refuse to have my children used as guinea pigs in taking any form of the PARCC Assessment being piloted at various schools in XXX Parish and around the state forcing children to be human subjects. There are valid concerns regarding the tracking associated with this assessment as it is written in their agreement with the US-Dept of Ed that they are required to show individual growth data on the students who take these assessments. As a result of many concerns, there is pending legislation to remove the PARCC assessments from Louisiana. Parents should be made aware of this and the schools should be required to obtain permission after full disclosure for these pilot tests. Regardless, please consider this written notice that my children, namely XXX at XXX school and XXX at XXX school are not to be given any form of PARCC and I am exercising my right as a parent to opt out of these assessments. I would also like to inform you that I do not give permission and thus my children should not be given any type of survey questions in any form whatsoever, not by any teacher, counselor, faculty member or otherwise; or any online surveys whatsoever. Kindly advise if anything further is required to have this effected immediately. I thank you for respecting my rights as the only authority over my children in this regard. The article that follows outlines some of the PARCC concerns nationwide. Sincerely,
