Despite a recent string of heated discussions involving rapier - TopicsExpress

Despite a recent string of heated discussions involving rapier fighting and its place in the peerage, I still wish to believe that the Chivalry (not all of them, but a strong majority of its membership) are honorable men and women, who would not continue to hold a position they knew to be indefensible, especially if they knew it was damaging to others, or to the Society. Im currently having trouble resolving that belief with the stance that non-rattan combat arts do not deserve to be included in the Order of Chivalry. Ive heard several reasons given, but none have made much sense to me, nor have they withstood even the simplest scrutiny. The stance that the combat forms are fundamentally different doesnt hold up when compared to the Laurel model of peerage, in which all art forms, from the extremely physical like blacksmithing and masonry, to the ephemeral, like poetry and musical performance, coexist. The stance that armored combat is sacrosanct because it determines who can become king is undermined by the existence of a peerage order specifically centered around Crown Tournament (Royal Peerage) and that the power to decide who can and cannot enter into Crown Tournament is exclusive to the Crown, not the Chivalry. However, I dont want to give up hope on the Chivalry. To that end, I am very interested in hearing a reasoned, rational argument for why rapier combat and armored combat are less compatible than the legions of different arts in the Laurel, or for any other argument for why the creation of an additional peerage and the segregation of combat at the Peerage level is a better long-term solution than the inclusion of non-rattan combat forms within the Chivalry. If there are any members of the Chivalry who wish to discuss this with me, I am eager to do so, either here, in private message, or in person. I assure you that I will take any and all steps necessary to keep discussion civil. Know that if you enter into this list field, you will be challenged. But from my end, at least, I guarantee a clean and honorable fight. And if I am bested, I will concede. Heck, if you make a solid enough case to change my mind, Ill champion it! The gauntlet has been dropped. I await all honorable comers.
