Despite increase in inpatient discharges, MMH finishes month in red By BOB BECKSTEAD TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2013 ARTICLE OPTIONS AA MASSENA - Although the number of inpatient discharges was above budget for September, Massena Memorial Hospital still finished the month nearly a half million dollars in the red. The hospital’s net loss for the month was $497,254, according to a report provided Monday night to members of the hospital’s Board of Managers. Chief Financial Officer Jim Smith said they recorded 213 inpatient discharges in September, 10 higher than their budgeted 203, but down from the 227 inpatient discharges they had in September 2012. “Obstetrical visits and deliveries in the month of September were very high, approximately double was the budget numbers were. That amounted to about 40 discharges above and beyond budget numbers,” he said. The big concern, he said, was that year-to-date, those numbers are still 5.44 percent below budget and 4.2 percent below last year’s total. Observation visits were also higher than budgeted last month, finishing September with 73 visits. They had budgeted 53 observation visits for the month. The final number was also higher than September 2012, when they recorded 67 observation visits. “Observation visits have been pretty steady throughout the year,” Mr. Smith said. On the other hand, there were 10,142 outpatient registrations in September, lower than the budgeted 10,967 and down from the 10,368 recorded in September 2012. “Outpatient visits were well below the previous month’s total and well below budget pretty much throughout,” he said. “For the most part, the ER and ambulatory surgery and other outpatient visits categories were down pretty significant numbers for September.” ER visits finished the month at 1,312, 10.44 percent below the budgeted 1,465, while ambulatory surgery visits had been budgeted at 222 and came in at 184. Other outpatient visits were budgeted at 5,217 and the hospital finished the month with 4,770. “That’s driving the net revenue numbers 13 percent below budget,” Mr. Smith said. Total net patient revenue was $3.4 million, lower than the budgeted $3.9 million. September 2012 net patient revenue was $3.7 million. Year to date, the hospital is $1.9 million in the red. At the same time period last year, they were $1.5 million in the red. Board members accepted $16,572 in bad debt write-off for September, bringing the yearly total to $1.4 million. They also accepted recoveries in September of $46,166.14, bringing their year-to-date total to $390,437.45.
