Despite recent allegations of pervasive antisemitism, Jews have always contributed significantly to French culture. Always thought of as a French rather than Jewish composer, Darius Milhaud,claimed to be descended from Jews who had settled in Provence in the 6th century BC when the Greeks established a colony at Marsilia (Marseilles). Although he achieved fame for jazz and Brazilian influenced compositions such as la Creation du Monde and ale Boeuf auf le Toit, Milhaud never forgot his Jewish heritage, drawing on Provencale Jewish melodies for his suite Provencale and La Service Sacree pour le Samedi Matin. Although he fled France at the time of the Nazi invasion, Milhaud titled his autobiography Ma Vie Heureuse and never referred to antisemitism in France
