Despite the recent controversy surrounding Woody Allen, it is hard - TopicsExpress

Despite the recent controversy surrounding Woody Allen, it is hard for me to think of a list of my top 5 favorite movies without including “Midnight in Paris. “ The film is about a Los Angeles screenwriter named Gil, played by Owen Wilson, who, while vacationing in Paris, finds himself fantasizing about a permanent life in the city. As a lover of literature, Gil expresses interest about Paris in the 1920’s and how it would have been remarkable to experience the roaring artistic period. This film is difficult to discuss without giving away the particular element that makes it fantastical, which Ebert acknowledges right off the bat. Ebert gives a brief film synopsis, containing admittedly more spoilers than the movie’s trailer. I appreciated that Ebert says, “Allen makes no attempt to explain this magic. None is needed. Nor do we have to decide if what happens is real or imaginary. It doesnt matter.” I completely agree with this statement and found that the charm of this film did not leave the audience demanding expectation. Ebert discusses how the film’s characters include famous writers and artists of the time and much of the screenplay’s witty dialogue is reliant on the audience’s prior knowledge of these historical geniuses. There are jokes in this film that fly over my head, but then there are others I completely understood. As Ebert perfectly says about “Midnight in Paris” in this review, “Either you connect with it or not.” rogerebert/reviews/midnight-in-paris-2011
