Despite what the headline suggests, the 3D printed heart was actually used for surgical planning, not organ replacement. This is, I think, one of the actually practical uses of 3D printing in academic medical centers, as a tactile form of simulation personalized to guide patient care, especially in unusual situations. Students who learn best by feeling, seeing up close, taking apart and playing with, etc. could also learn from these as simulation for both rare and more common situations as well, especially as the variety of printable materials expands.
