Developing Creative Power The aim of this course is to develop the creative power we all have in us. It is oriented toward those who want to control their lives, while ceasing being onlookers so as to become active participants. It is easy to determine if we are onlookers or creators. When we ask ourselves, why does this happen to me? Why cant I manage to? Why dont I have? Why am I not? We are accepting things happening to us beyond our control. Here we are asked to give up this way of thinking and start planning the type of life we really want. First we must redefine possible and impossible and modify our corresponding value judgements. The course content is developed over four encounter sessions in which we analyze the most frequent limiting beliefs and apply suitable techniques in order to achieve a deep change. In a short while surprising results will emerge. Let us concentrate our attention on the following limiting aspects: A- The prism we look through: although we assuredly believe ourselves to be objective in our perception of reality, the way we interpret ourselves and our surroundings is filtered and often distorted by prior beliefs and experiences. Discovering those filters will allow us to have a clearer and unhindered vision. On the other hand, each individual perceives reality differently. Being unaware of this complicates interpersonal relationships due to the conclusions we arrive at from our own viewpoints without taking into account anothers background and makeup. Avoiding such conclusions will free us from an amount of unnecessary suffering and at the same time ease communication with all those with whom we come into contact. B- What we are and what we believe we are: as children we intake information about the way we ought to look, be educated, our abilities, peer groups, social status, income level, etc. In short, a line has been drawn between what is possible and what is impossible. Guidelines have been set which will determine how our life will be as it is shaped by beliefs. The conviction that what we are will lead us to act in a specific way and obtain the expected outcomes for that type of behavior. Thus, the original idea becomes reinforced and we convince ourselves more and more that we are so, For example, if someone were to tell us we have no aptitude for music and we believed him, we certainly will not attempt to play any instrument, and, if we do, there are many chances of things turning our badly. The negative reaction to our attempt will reinforce the belief concerning our lack of ability (see vicious circles). How many things are there that we do not try due to thinking that we cant? Nevertheless, impossible things only exist in our minds. When we manage to recognize the influence within the context and discover which are our true abilities, we regain the freedom to choose a new system of beliefs and as a result, a different life. We realize that there exists an enormous and unexplored field for action. C- Giving up being judge and victim: Judgements, complaints and comparisons use up a good part of our vitality. While complaining we convince ourselves that our unhappiness originates in people, activities and circumstances beyond ourselves or we set the satisfaction level via comparison with others without doing anything capable of improving the situation. All of this causes us unnecessary anguish which can be easily eliminated. We play alternately the roles of judge and victim. The former names us as guilty, an undeserved charge due to our incapacity and as the latter, we acknowledge ourselves to be inept, incapable, guilty and with other negative aspects. If we discover that we behave in this fashion, we can change it and also the direction of our being. Freeing ourselves from the roles of judge and victim will allow us to be ourselves. D- Not living in the present: living in the present is freeing ourselves of the anxiety concerning the future and the nostalgia or sadness over things past. Our minds are used to wandering: both fixating on a painful event in the past which continues to fill the present with agony and also losing sleep over what will happen in the future. Nostalgia, sadness and anxiety have nothing to offer, but they do keep us from fully enjoying the present. Controlling ones mind while choosing positive thoughts will allow us to employ creative energy to attain our goals. E- Vicious circles: some bear on the shaping of our personality and others on mood and/or behavior. In all cases once we enter a vicious circle it becomes difficult getting out until we manage to distinguish cause from effect. We must learn to cease being reactive so as to change into proactive individuals who freely determine what they want to be, feel and do. Lets look at some examples of vicious circles: 1. When we are sad we usually recall painful moments which intensify our feelings of sadness. 2. If we are sure that we cant do something, we act in accord with this view, and the results, generally negative, only serve to reinforce our original beliefs. 3 Aggressive behaviors of parents toward their children reproduces itself in the relationships within the couple and toward their own offspring. F- Paralyzing fear: the fear of failure, of ridicule and many others become a barrier that keeps us from attaining our goals. Nevertheless, if we can make the most of it, it can be a good source of wisdom which will show us that we are not yet ready for something and that we must work and practice at it until becoming proficient. When we decide to cast off paralyzing fear and listen to our source of wisdom we are on our way to success. G- Non-assertive behavior: working on clear, exact, aware and consistent communication, free from fear, anger, guilt and the like will improve remarkably our relationships. H- Not being prepared for success: if we are certain that we deserve what we want, inevitably the opportunity will arise for achieving it and when this happens we must be ready to seize that favorable turn of events. After looking over each of these aspects, their influence in our lives and the ways they have held us back, we can start to change. With techniques which are simple and easy to apply, we can leave behind our obstacles and begin a stage of conscious creating, choosing what we want to be, do and have. We will discover that thoughts, emotions and feelings are creative energy at our disposal all the time and that we can begin thus to write our own script. Once change is underway, it will not stop, and change will prove to be positive and lasting. Each new day, to our surprise, we will achieve new things which will increase our degree of satisfaction and fill us with enthusiasm to face the next challenge. Step by step we will discover that the universe offers us thousands of possibilities, that we can reach an objective through numerous approaches and that old limiting beliefs can be replaced by enthusiasm and confidence. Then we will be capable of making our lives according to our plans.
