Devotion 1-15-2015 If you are joining us in reading through Joshua, Judges, and Ruth today’s reading is Joshua 10:1-15 and the devotion is taken from verses 6-8. The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.” So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men. The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.” By not asking the right questions Joshua and the Israelites were now in situation that they had to defend the Gibeonites from the five Amorite kings. They now had to go to war because of an ally. So a result of the Gibeonite deception was that the Israelites had to now go and defend the people they were originally told to destroy. The result of this war could’ve been disastrous but Joshua knew that God is in charge. So many times we caught in situations that we begin to doubt God’s sovereignty. It may be that things were going alright but now in just a moment of time everything is falling apart and it looks like there is defeat on the horizon. Our God is a faithful God. He will not let us be defeated. We may struggle for a time and it may look like we are going to lose but if we continue to have faith in him we will be rewarded with victory. Romans 8:38-39 promises there is nothing in this world that can be used by Satan to defeat us. There is no creative power, there is nothing above, and there is nothing below that can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus. Is there a battle looming in your future? You can trust on the promises and God’s word to help you through that battle. As the old hymns says: “trust and obey for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.” Trust God in your trials. Throw yourself at his feet and see how he picks you up and give you victory.
