Devotion: 1 Peter 5:10 NKJV [10] But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 1Pe 5:10 indicates that grace is provided through the disciplines of life. God allows us to suffer that He might be able to shed His grace upon us. When we suffer, we come to the end of ourselves and learn to lean on Him. Grace is supplied only to those who sense their need for Him. First we suffer; then, as we suffer, He equips us, confirms us, and puts a foundation under us. The words “make you perfect” (1Pe 5:10) are used in Mat 4:21 and carry the image of mending a net. The Gk. word means “to equip for service.” Suffering not only helps the believer grow, but it also equips him for future service. Sometimes the best way God has of “mending our nets” is to put us through suffering.
